Best Deputation Practices: Lessons from a Week on the Road

Deputation is getting busier every week! We’ve been working hard to fill the schedule and line up meetings, and now the calendar is completely full for the foreseeable future. On September 6, I left home and headed to Louisiana for several meetings, while Laura stayed behind to continue her work at Central Baptist Christian School. She is still serving as Academic Vice Principal and training her replacement.

Gospel Light Baptist Church – Lafayette, LA

Sunday morning, I had the privilege of being with Gospel Light Baptist Church in Lafayette, Louisiana. It’s a young church plant, but they are doing a great work. Pastor Jake Weido is working hard to see souls saved and to plant a strong church in the fourth-largest city in the state. I was able to show our video, present our ministry in West Africa, and enjoy a powerful message from Pastor Jake. After church, I shared a meal with the Weido family, and we had a great time of fellowship.

Grace Baptist Church – Marrero, LA

That evening, I traveled to Marrero to be with Grace Baptist Church and Pastor Shannon Foote. Grace Baptist has supported us in the past, and it was a joy to reconnect. I presented our ministry and preached, and the altars were full after the message. It was a blessing to be with old friends and feel the warm spirit of that church.

Thrivetime Show Podcast Interview

Before the evening service, I had the opportunity to sit down for a podcast interview with Clay Clark on the Thrivetime Show. Clay has an incredible amount of energy, and he’s been a big help in my business life. It was a blessing to tell him and his listeners about our return to Ghana.

Fellowship in New Iberia

After church, several families and I went to a local oriental restaurant, where we laughed, shared stories, and enjoyed good food and fellowship. Later, I drove back to New Iberia to stay with family who serve at Temple Baptist Church. My brother-in-law Aaron Weido, his wife Amy, and their kids Adrianna, Jud, Austin, Asa, and Andrew are an amazingly talented family, and it’s always refreshing to be around them.

Fishing and Family Time

On Monday night, Aaron, Jud, their youth pastor David Coupe, and I went fishing. We stayed out until 3 a.m. and caught forty catfish—some of them huge! I’ve never caught so many big fish in one night.

During the days Monday through Thursday, I worked on materials for our church Bible institute. Since I’m traveling more now, I’ve started recording my lessons and posting them online so students can access them anytime. We partner with Revival Fires Baptist College, and I’ve been teaching courses to help expand their curriculum.

Temple Baptist Church – New Iberia, LA

Wednesday night, I presented our work and preached at Temple Baptist Church. It was a blessing to be in that pulpit with family and friends, and I especially enjoyed hearing my niece and nephews sing and play music.

Preaching in Pierre Part, LA

Thursday evening, Jud and Austin went with me to Pierre Part, Louisiana, where I preached in a church plant in that amazing Cajun community. More people there spoke French than English—I could have preached in French! My nephews led the singing, played piano, and even sang a special. The congregation loved it, and I did too. We left encouraged and thankful for the opportunity.

On the way home, I treated my nephews to supper at a Cajun seafood restaurant. The food was unbelievably fresh, and the hospitality made it worth the drive.

Encouragement from Missionary Friends

Before closing this update, I want to mention my friend Keith Stensas, a missionary in Uganda. Keith has always been a blessing to me. He hosts the podcast Always Abounding, which is a constant encouragement. His wife also writes a blog — Handfuls of Blessings — that my wife enjoys and I’ve also found helpful. I thank God for their faithful example.

I can’t wait to share how the Lord continues to bless in upcoming posts. Thank you for following along as we make our way back to Ghana.
