Missionary Internship for Young Adults

A behind-the-scenes look at a chaotic, rain-soaked wedding day in Ghana — and the lessons hidden inside mission field life.

Some days on a missionary internship for young adults feel quiet and reflective. Other days feel like organized chaos.

This day in Ghana turned into both.

I woke up around seven that morning and stayed quietly in my room.

The house downstairs was full of bridesmaids preparing for a traditional wedding.

A Quiet Start on a Busy Day

Sometimes missionary life begins with surprising moments of stillness.

While the bridal party filled the house, I stayed upstairs reading my Bible.

Mrs. Ruckman suggested it might be wise for me to stay out of the way.

So I rested, studied, and enjoyed the quiet.

Then Bro. Ruckman knocked on the door.

He brought breakfast.

Yes, breakfast in bed on the mission field.

Even during a missionary internship for young adults, God teaches lessons in the quiet moments before the busy ones arrive.

Unexpected Lessons During a Missionary Internship for Young Adults

Around nine that morning the piano player gave me the signal.

The coast was finally clear.

I stepped downstairs wearing a brand-new white shirt and black pants.

The house was still buzzing with wedding activity.

Learning From the Photographers

While everyone prepared for the ceremony, I found myself talking with the photographers.

They noticed my camera and lens almost immediately.

Then something unexpected happened.

They asked if I wanted to help take some photos.

For the next hour they showed me camera settings and techniques.

It turned into a small photography lesson in the middle of wedding preparations.

Mission internships often teach skills in unexpected ways.

Sometimes those lessons come through ordinary conversations.

Other times they come through muddy shoes and pouring rain.

That part of the story was still ahead.

Before leaving the house, the bridal party gathered together. missionary internship for young adults witnessing Ghana bridal party preparations

When Mission Field Plans Fall Apart

The wedding was scheduled for 11:30 that morning.

That plan quickly disappeared.

The makeup artist arrived two hours late.

And that delay set everything back.

By 11:30 people were still getting ready.

By 12:30 they were still getting ready.

No one had slept much the night before either.

Bro. Ruckman had only slept two hours.

Finally Leaving the House

We did not leave the house until about one in the afternoon.

Just as the vehicles started pulling out, the rain began.

Not a gentle drizzle.

A full Ghana downpour.

I was responsible for locking the gates behind everyone.

So I stayed behind for a moment.

That meant I was standing outside when the storm arrived.

Mission work rarely follows the schedule. Rain, mud, and surprises often become part of the story.

Running Through the Rain

Just when I thought my job was finished, the bride remembered something.

She had forgotten a box inside the house.

And someone needed to retrieve it.

That someone was me.

The Wettest Errand of the Day

I ran back across the property in the pouring rain.

First I found Bro. Ruckman to get the keys.

Then I sprinted back to the locked doors.

Inside I searched quickly for the box.

Once I found it, I locked everything again.

The gates had to be closed and locked too.

Then I ran back to the vehicle.

By the time I climbed inside, I was completely soaked.

Mission internships do not always involve classrooms.

Sometimes they involve rainstorms and forgotten boxes.

Wedding Day on a Muddy Mission Field

We finally arrived at the church around 1:30.

The entire property had turned into a mud pit.

Still, the wedding continued.

And it was a beautiful ceremony.

Power Outages and Generators

Partway through the service the power went out.

Fortunately a generator kept everything running.

The microphones struggled at times.

But no one seemed too worried.

People were simply grateful the ceremony continued.

Meanwhile I continued helping the photographers.

It allowed me to see the wedding from a unique angle.

Most people watch weddings from the pews.

I saw it from behind the cameras.

Before the reception, the muddy church yard told its own story. missionary internship for young adults muddy church grounds after rain in Ghana

What a Missionary Internship for Young Adults Really Teaches

By the end of the ceremony my feet were aching.

But the day was not finished.

Pictures still needed to be taken.

The reception area outside had flooded.

Adapting to Real Mission Life

Because of the rain the reception moved indoors.

Everyone simply adjusted.

That flexibility is part of life on the mission field.

Eventually I sat down to eat around 3:30.

The food was excellent.

Although it was definitely spicy.

Later we returned home to change clothes.

Then we came back to help clean up.

Missionary life rarely ends when the service ends.

A Different Cultural Tradition

That evening the bride and two bridesmaids came to stay at our house.

In this culture the bride and groom do not stay together yet.

The final thanksgiving service happens the next morning.

Only then do they begin their life together.

A Long but Joyful Day

The house finally quieted down that evening.

Everyone was exhausted.

But the day had been unforgettable.

Mission field life is rarely predictable.

Yet those unexpected days often become the most meaningful memories.

If you are curious about serving overseas, you can learn more through the Missionary Internships program.

A missionary internship for young adults gives a glimpse into real ministry life.

Rainstorms, muddy shoes, late weddings, and all.

And sometimes those chaotic days become the very moments God uses to teach the most.
