Rio Rancho Missions Conference

Preparing for the Road Ahead

After returning home from the missions conference at Higher Plain Baptist Church, I took a few days to catch up on some much-needed maintenance. The truck got a fresh oil change, the brakes were repaired, and everything was made road-ready for another round of missionary travel.

That Wednesday evening, we visited Appleby Baptist Church, where I’ve known Pastor Dennis Anderson for many years. It was a joy to see not only him but also his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. I went to high school with two of his daughters, and reconnecting with the Anderson family was truly a blessing.

Encouragement from Home

On Thursday, I spent the morning with my pastor, visiting in his office and sharing stories from the road. We had a wonderful time of fellowship and encouragement. His wife reminded me how much they miss us when we’re away, and I was once again reminded how blessed we are to have such faithful friends at our home church.

Heading to Houston

Friday evening, Laura and I drove to Houston so I could catch an early Saturday flight. We stayed near the airport and enjoyed a peaceful night before dealing with the busy TSA lines caused by the government shutdown.

Everything went smoothly, and I arrived right on time in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Pastor Brent Lenentine met me at the airport. He took me to lunch with his wife and Missionary Jonel Sonyat and his wife, who serve as church planters and run a prison ministry in the Philippines.

A Warm Welcome in Rio Rancho

Pastor Lenentine arranged a comfortable hotel for us in Bernalillo, NM, about thirty minutes from the church. It was quiet, clean, and perfect for rest between meetings.

On Saturday evening, I took a long walk to help with my blood sugar management. I’m learning how much of a difference regular walking and a healthy diet make. Please continue to pray that I’ll stay disciplined—I want to be in my best shape for the work ahead in Ghana.

A Church with a Heart for Missions

Gospel Light Baptist Church in Rio Rancho holds a special place in our hearts. Pastor Lenentine is a soul-winning pastor who has built a missions-minded congregation that loves reaching the lost. Every time I’m there, I’m refreshed by their energy and passion.

This is also the church where we met “George”—the little boy featured in one of Laura’s favorite stories from my book, That’s My Goat! Each time we visit, it feels like returning to family.

Children’s Missions Conference Highlights

On Tuesday evening, I spoke at the Kids Missions Conference, and it was one of the most encouraging parts of the week. The children were enthusiastic, the workers were dedicated, and the entire event was beautifully planned. I believe these kinds of children’s missions events plant seeds that will one day grow into lifelong commitments to the Great Commission.

Preaching and Fellowship

Missionary Jonel Sonyat preached both Sunday services, while Pastor Chris Rodgers preached on Monday and Tuesday. Pastor Rodgers is a hardworking church planter in New Mexico whose sending church has also started several churches in Mexico—a testimony to the power of multiplication in missions.

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to preach. God gave me great liberty, and the people responded with open hearts. The altars were full, and I left encouraged by the Spirit of God working among His people.

New Friendships and Lasting Memories

Throughout the week, I spent a lot of time with the Sonyats. We stayed at the same hotel and even shared a car provided by the pastor. Our long drives gave us time for great conversations about ministry, family, and faith. I’m thankful to have gained new friends who are faithfully serving God in another part of the world.

Reflection

The Rio Rancho Missions Conference reminded me once again that the work of missions is a shared calling. Whether it’s a child learning about the Great Commission, a pastor faithfully training his people, or a missionary presenting the vision, God weaves it all together for His glory.

As we prepare for our move to Ghana, I’m grateful for every opportunity to connect with churches like Gospel Light Baptist. Their faith and partnership strengthen us for the journey ahead.
